IMPEDIMENTA

Some sections are under construction JULY 2025

Impedimenta is a collection of projects exploring our relationship with the objects that crowd our lives. Objects that form bridges between the past and the present, reassuring us of our history as temporal beings, objects that carry cultural significance, objects held as a talisman, or objects of profligacy.

These objects which are gathered over time and then curated into hierarchies of meaning.

In my old family home, my father, a war child, would only keep objects that might serve a useful purpose in the future. There was little sentiment and absolutely no fiscal attachment. Utility overrode materialism, empiricism guarded against ideology. A constant reminder of how our personal criteria for collection reveal our value systems and the stories that hold these together.

Where do we all choose to locate this line in the sand that arbitrarily divides these significant objects from those abandoned to limitless confusion and how and why does this line alter and migrate over time? Where does embodied cognition meet projection and imagination?

The resulting body of work explores these and other related questions using individual and collaborative responses. Using a variety of different approaches, material techniques and audience interactions to straddle the discreet elements.
